SmartNav: Navigation FAQs

SmartNav: Navigation FAQs

Is SmartNav: Navigation a new product or an update to the previous SmartNav?SmartNav: Navigation is an entirely new product with added features and functionality. While it is like it’s predecessor, it is a new product, with a new product code and is entirely separate to the previous version of SmartNav. It is not to be considered an update.
Why is it more expensive?

SmartNav: Navigation is a new application that has a huge number of features and functionality enhancement over the previous version that has been redeveloped from the ground up by the team at Teletrac Navman’s transport office.

What type of hardware do I require?SmartNav: Navigation is very memory intensive and thus requires the use of the ruggedised iFace. It will not operate on previous iterations of the iFace.
Do I require WiFi to download maps & updates? Can it be done over 3G?Yes, a WiFi connection and configuration is required to download all mapping updates. The customer will require a WiFi network at their location/depot which is configured via NextGen and automatically sync’d with the devices. Currently, these mapping updates cannot be completed over the air via 3G connectivity as it is extremely data intensive.
How often do you update maps?

Usually twice a year. Customers will be notified of map updates when they are available.

Does it work offline or is a 3G signal required?SmartNav: Navigation works offline, independent of cellular / network signal. All mapping information required is downloaded to the iFace directly and doesn’t require further streaming/downloading. It does not include the Australian regulatory road networks (IAP, HML, Crane, Permits, etc.). SmartNav: Route is required for this feature which will be available at a later date.
What’s the difference between this and SmartNav: Route?SmartNav: Route is an entirely different application that takes into consideration the Australian regulatory road network to guide drivers on the correct path for their vehicle’s configuration into a navigable format to provide the driver with turn-by-turn navigation. It also allows operators to create routes in the back-office and sent to the driver to complete exactly as it appears with turn-by-turn directions. To begin with, it will only be available in select states for select road networks. Please check for subject of availability
Has it got route-to available?Yes, route-to functionality is available.
What apps integrate with SmartNav: Navigation?A number of applications currently integrate with SmartNav:
  • SmartJobs (job management), route-to job from a runsheet
  • Messages, route-to via Director or NextGen
  • SpeedAssist, sign-posted speed
  • Sign-posted speed event reporting.
More applications will be integrated with SmartNav: Navigation over time.
Does it have truck attributes? What does that mean for me (the operator)?Yes, SmartNav: Navigation will allow you to input a vehicle's dimensions (length, width & height). These will be taken into account by the mapping engine within the application but should not be relied upon solely. The driver and operator are to always use their best judgement. This does not mean the vehicle will be routed on regulatory road networks, such as the B-Double network.
Will it provide sign-posted speed?Yes, sign-posted speed will be available. Please note that this is subject to accuracy of the mapping provider which can be out of date and unreliable as with all navigation products on the market.
How does lane guidance work? When driving in unfamiliar territories, SmartNav: Navigation will help you navigate easier by displaying the correct lane you’re required to be in. You are able to get a clear look ahead before reaching a complicated intersection, so you can prepare for changing lanes. When driving a heavy-vehicle, this is extremely important.
Can I get traffic and speed cameras included?Currently, SmartNav: Navigation does not include traffic or speed camera information. This is to be available toward the end of the year at an additional charge.
Is the original SmartNav available if I just want 2D maps? No, only SmartNav: Navigation is available and is the primary navigation application on the iFace
Can drivers report incorrect speed limits?

Yes. From the navigation screen:

Tap "Map error":

And report the speed limit error

Afterwards, this report is sent directly to the map provider (Here.com)
